Those of you familiar with the thread John runs have followed along as he has run the tops of the mountains up here in Utah. This year he has the privilege of running with his youngest son who is new to the sport, but a natural born trail runner like his Dad.
So far they have run the trails around town and begun to advance up into the mountains. The doggos love the mountains too 😉
In the beginning, running is about finding your breath and your stride. Watching your feet to make sure you don’t stumble over or into anything that will land you in the dirt.
Its about pushing a little more each day until you suddenly find yourself going the distance, reaching the end of the trail and you are not watching every step. Your lungs open and you can breathe, you feel spent and satisfied. You actually look forward to the next run.
” It makes me want to run farther, go longer and together, we make a pretty great team. I have a lot to learn and a lot more to endure and my Dad will help me get there. I think my Dad is an awesome runner, sometimes I wonder what motivates him to keep running but the more I run, the more I am starting to understand. Running is peaceful. Running is freedom.” Rowen Martin, age 14.
The Mountains around Payson have taken a big hit from the big fires from last year. There are a lot of burned trees and a lot less shade, but there is still beauty. The air is clear and clean, the birds sing and the squirrels are scurrying around.
The fire destroyed but it will also renew, and the trees will grow again.
Stay tuned for more adventures with John and Rowen 🙂
