Don’t be a ME-HOLE

I can get so busy with the things going on in my head that nothing else can get through. Its like I suddenly live on a tiny island, in the Bermuda triangle, surrounded by fog and white noise.

That’s right, I said it, a me-hole.

What is it? When you get so absorbed in your life, that you cannot see anything else happening around you.

I am a frequent offender here. A, me-hole. (Picture a very shame faced person) I can get so busy with the things going on in my head that nothing else can get through. Like I suddenly live on a tiny island, in the Bermuda triangle, surrounded by fog and white noise.

I am so focused on the next step of what ever it is I am doing, I usually don’t even realize it’s happened, that I have fallen into the me – black hole.  I have emerged time and again to find that holidays and important life events have come to call and I am there in body, but not mentally engaged.

I will get a call or text from a friend and suddenly wake up again to the outside world,  inevitably feeling like a jerk for forgetting nearly everyone else in my own self/family absorption.

It is never on purpose, never intentionally an obtuse, cotton headed ninny muggins. I try to be a good caretaker of others feelings and to find I’ve fallen short makes me feel a bit sick inside.

To combat this….. I started scheduling my life. Sounds boring right? Well it has been a game changer! I have a really big calendar in my room, visible and in my face so I just cannot miss seeing it every day. I also have 2 white boards and a little chalk board that I have a running list of to do’s and honey do’s. Overkill….? Nope. Not for me 😉

Does it help? Shockingly, honestly and not really surprisingly, it does. And for entirely obvious reasons – what I see every day, in front of my nose, is what stays in my brain.

I have a constant series of reminders that keep me present. Admittedly, I will still slip into the tiny Bermuda island in my head and get really focused on a particularly interesting project, but it is less and less often.

Are you a me-hole? There are a myriad of different ways to combat this, Jordan Page of Fun, Cheap or Free, has a Productivity Boot Camp course that is incredibly well thought out. Mark McKenna, Author of Put Out the Fires, is all over LinkedIn with great ideas. Marie Kondo has the KonMari method, The life changing magic of tidying up.

All of the above people have something in common, they are not stuck in the fog! They SEE everything they need to do and prioritize so that it is attainable!

Post lesson…. don’t be a me-hole. Look around, search the almighty Google for it, find what works for you and take it step by step until you create a system that works how YOU need it to!

Fist bump, let’s do this.

XOXO
