It’s dark and cold, the runners and crew are huddled together in shifting clusters of warmth. At the start is a U-haul truck. I’m calling it the U-haul truck of destiny 😉
John is pumped and ready, up since 4:00 am. My oldest son is there with me to crew for the morning and we are covering yawns and slow blinking.
The trick for John is to moderate his pace in the beginning, fast enough to move, slow enough to last.
Cameras are flashing around us, ours too. Pictures for posterity are saved and shared, and then it’s time.
They line up, really they just shift over leaving the crews behind and anxiously wait.
A short “have a great race and it’s a GO!
John folds into the crowd and runs into the very beginnings of dawn with the pack. As they go, paces will change groups will break and reform. Some will run alone after a while, setting their pace and enjoying the crisp morning. John will be one of those.
This Bear 100 is the 20th Anniversary and the founder and many other veterans are running. It will be quite a story out on the trails!
