That’s me, Hero Support for Team #Johnruns as he pushes himself to reach the finish line.
Currently John is running flats. You might know what that means….? Yep, Injury. He has a small strained muscle in his calf that is causing discomfort on the hills and so, flats its been for the last two weeks and maybe another week more.
There is wisdom in running flats though, he is able to get his miles in with out further straining that pesky little muscle. Flats are not fun for him though. Better than the dreadmill, though but still lacking in the technical aspects of running he enjoys the most.
He is at the point of his training that he can see the light at the end of the tunnel and can’t wait to get there. And he’s a little sick of the constant running.
While he is out mile after mile after miles, I will be in the truck following where I can. There will be aid stations along his route and plenty of people cheering, encouraging and patching him up. So what is my purpose, why do I even need to be there if there are so many who know how to give him what his body needs to keep moving?
It’s a thought that has been turning around in my head for a while now and I’ve come to the conclusion that my purpose is to BE THERE. To be present for him, this is not my hero story it really is about HIS journey. And that’s the way it should be.
It is a wonderful thing to be a part of something major in someone else’s life and to watch them struggle to succeed. I dare you to watch a baby take their first halting steps and not be moved. A child learn how to ride a bike after crashing a million times and not cheer. The first A+, award, standing ovation, shiny metal or any well earned accolade. The sense of pride in a hard job done and dusted pushes us on to the next thing.
It is inspiring to be there as the universe moves for someone and new paths click into place and in the support of John’s dreams I will be gifted with a spark for my own.
In the Clymb Audra Rundle Writes some tips for helping your runner.
“No matter the distance to be covered, race day is a big deal for a runner. It’s the culmination of weeks or months of preparation, psyching one’s self up, highs and lows, strategic workouts, a couple freak-outs, random bouts of excitement, and immeasurable anticipation. And person(s) who support a runner play a pivotal role on race day. You can’t run the race for your runner, but you can sure help in making their big day go smoother.”
She goes on to list 5 simple, yet valuable, ways to be Hero Support. She ends her list with a one task – “Hand your runner a full cup of water and tell them that you will not drive home until they drink it” 😉 The final advice she gives is the kind of act that should be a part of what we all do for each other. To LISTEN. Just let them talk and tell you everything, anything. Let them relive the agony’s and the runners high’s.
Running may not be an affliction but this quote is a lovely summation.
