Warning, this post is all about the feels and homespun wisdom’s from the world family we all belong to.
– A letter to my kids –
This letter is not going to be filled with words that have not been spoken, ideas that have not been shared before, or feelings that have not been expressed. There are so many voices in the world to guide you, let this letter be another.
I hope for you. I hope that when its hard, you will reach for the light and not hide in the darkness. I hope that if you are in the darkness, if you only remember one thing, it will be love and that it will hold you until you can reach for the light. I hope that you know that there is not joy without pain, sorrow without sadness. That you will accept that the good cannot come with out the bad and be ready for it, better for it.
You are loved, unconditionally.
How I wish I could smooth the way for you, that I could give you the lessons I’ve learned and the mistakes I’ve made so that you need not make them. I would give you the joy you have brought me by being able to be your mother. But, I cannot. This is your journey, your life and it must be about your choices. To that end I will give you some time tested advice…
“Make your bed! Just make your bed, because by accomplishing that you have completed one small task. If nothing else goes right in your day you will come home and see your lovely, perfectly made bed and know you accomplished something.”
Wake up, don’t sleepwalk through your life. Be intentional, make your choices with the purpose of a goal or an ideal. Think before you speak, is it true, is it helpful, is it inspiring, is it necessary, is it kind…? (Sometimes silence will make a point that words will not) Don’t judge a person or a situation until you know the All the facts. Recognize that you might never know all the facts and be KIND.
Know your destination, keep it in mind so that when you have an obstacle to overcome you can make your way back to it. Be the boss of your own self, don’t only do what is easy, do what makes you great. Fight for what is right, champion the underdog and be a good human.
Dream, and then work hard to make your dreams come true. Don’t be afraid of change, it is not an end, it’s just a new and exciting “bonus chapter” where something surprising happens and you learn something. Be grateful, be aware of the gifts, opportunities and resources you have. Have faith, big or small, hold it tight and never let go.
Rest and sleep are beautiful and glorious and you need them more that you think. Do not let distractions steal your time, it is fleeting, spend it on things that will MATTER in a year. Ask for help, people are not meant to go through this life alone, we need to rely on each other. And, in the same breath, I would tell you to Give help. In any way you can as much as you can. Make a village, fill it with the people in you life who raise you up and make you want to be your best self.
Smile, because your smile can be shared one person to another and go on and on and on. Laugh long and hard and often. Laughter is the best medicine for the heart. Do things that bring you joy, find your niche. You were made to fit in and stick out, own it. Family is important, they were with you in the beginning and they will be with you in the end. Good relationships need work, sacrifice and commitment, be willing to do both.
Love with all your heart and everything you have in you. Live every day to its fullest and like it might be your last.
Look outside of your self, live to be a part of humanity. Share your voice, your thoughts, your heart, your soul. There is always more to give inside of you that you think. You are not a single page in a book, a drop in a vast ocean, a number among billions – You are singular and unique by simply being who you are.
You are ENOUGH, I beg you to find acceptance for who you are inside your own skin and let the negative opinions of the few drift away on the wind. After all, we are all a work in progress. You define yourself by your actions, be the kind of person you want to wake up with every morning. Live your life so that you are proud of the person you see in the mirror.
If you want to change the world, do it. Doubt your doubts or your doubt-ers, there is no limit to what you can do if you set your mind to it. To add a quote by a ponderously wise and silly bear “Promise me you’ll always remember: you’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
I’ll love you forever, (though I may not like you, or you me, sometimes) as long as forever my baby you’ll be. And really, MAKE YOUR BED, I do.
The Bed quote is loosely taken from the commencement speech of Admiral William H. McRaven in 2014 to the graduating class of The University of Texas.
